About Brion Applegate
Brion Applegate is a General Partner with Spectrum Equity, a venture capital investment fund that he co-founded with William Collatos in 1994. Applegate began his career in capital investment while earning his Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School after earning a Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University. During this period, he interned with a well-known private equity firm, TA Associates, where he would also work briefly as a consultant after the completion of his degree.
Applegate joined the team at Burr, Egan, Deleage, & Co. as an associate, and after his initial few years of gaining experience in a wide variety of areas, he began to develop a specialty in the growing mobile communications market. This specialty has expanded to include other communications technologies, software, and media, and Applegate has served on the Board of Directors for a number of such companies.
After 13 years with the firm, he embarked on the development of a new venture capital investment company with William Collatos. This company began life as a fund proposal, but when the managing partners of Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co. passed on the offer, Applegate and Collatos developed the fund proposal into what became Spectrum Equity. Out from beneath the umbrella of a large investment firm, the two men traveled throughout the United States to develop a new list of investors. Applegate and his associates secured $12.5 million in initial funding in 1994. Currently, Spectrum, under Applegate's and Collatos’ leadership, has grown substantially into a $4.7 billion private equity firm.
Brion Applegate continues to serve on the boards of a number of software, media, education and communications companies. He also is a member of the Board of Trustees for his alma mater, Colgate University.
